7 techniques to minimize injection site reactions

01

Room temperature

Take the medication out of the refrigerator 15-30 minutes before injecting. Cold medication causes more burning and irritation.

02

Site rotation

Alternate between abdomen (at least 2 inches from the navel), outer thigh, and back of the arm. Never inject the same site twice in a row.

03

Slow injection technique

Inject the medication slowly — do not rush the process. A fast injection increases pressure in the tissue and causes more pain.

04

Pressure without rubbing

After removing the needle, apply gentle pressure with a clean cotton pad for 10-15 seconds. Do not rub the area — this can cause additional irritation.

05

Clean and dry skin

Clean the site with alcohol and wait for it to dry completely before injecting. Moist skin can cause additional burning.

06

Correct angle

Inject at a 45-90 degree angle depending on your amount of subcutaneous tissue. Your doctor at Miami Injections will tell you the correct angle for your body.

07

Always new needles

Use a new needle for every injection. Reused needles become dull and cause more tissue trauma and pain.

Recommended Injection Sites

Abdomen

The most common site. Inject at least 2 inches from the navel. Avoid the midline. Excellent absorption.

Outer thigh

Outer part of the thigh, halfway between the knee and hip. Good option if the abdomen is sensitive.

Back of the arm

Back of the upper arm (triceps area). Requires assistance or a mirror. Useful for rotation when other sites are sensitive.

Questions about injection site reactions

Yes, a mild burning or itching sensation immediately after the injection is completely normal and typically lasts only a few minutes. This happens because the medication deposits into subcutaneous tissue. If the burning is intense, lasts more than 30 minutes, or is accompanied by significant swelling, contact your doctor immediately.

To minimize reactions: (1) Let the medication reach room temperature before injecting (15-30 minutes out of the refrigerator). (2) Rotate injection sites (abdomen, thigh, back of the arm). (3) Inject slowly — do not rush the process. (4) Apply gentle pressure after — do not rub the area. (5) Make sure the skin is clean and dry. At Miami Injections, our team teaches you the correct technique in person.

Contact your doctor if you experience: redness spreading beyond 2 cm from the injection site, significant swelling lasting more than 48 hours, intense heat or pus (signs of infection), fever, or a systemic allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, widespread hives). These reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention. Call Miami Injections at (305) 490-2240.

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. Injection site reactions are more common during the first weeks of treatment and tend to decrease significantly as the body adapts to the medication. Rotating injection sites and improving technique are the most effective interventions.

A normal reaction is localized (only at the injection site), mild (small redness, slight tenderness), and resolves within hours. An allergic reaction may include hives spreading beyond the site, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness. If you experience systemic symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately.

In most cases, yes. Mild reactions do not require stopping treatment. However, always inform your doctor about any reaction you experience. At Miami Injections, our medical team evaluates each case individually and can adjust injection technique, site, or administration speed to minimize discomfort.

B12 + Lipotropic (MIC) injections generally cause fewer reactions than GLP-1 injections. There may be mild burning or temporary redness, which typically resolves within minutes. Correct intramuscular or subcutaneous injection technique minimizes any discomfort.
